UFC in Los Angeles: Shogun vs. Vera Fight Pick

UFC Los Angeles Shogun Vera
The UFC (Ultimate Fighting Championship) finally makes its return to Los Angeles. UFC on Fox 4, headlined by Mauricio "Shogun" Rua vs. Brandon Vera, will take place Saturday, August 4 at the Staples Center in Los Angeles.  Let's take a look at the main event, and then I'll make my fight pick.

Mauricio "Shogun" Rua made himself an MMA legend by proving himself to be a dominant fighter in the PRIDE organization.  When he came to the UFC, he had compiled an overall MMA fight record of  16-2.  But, he hasn't faired so well in the UFC, going 4-4 versus the best in the world.  A win in Los Angeles August 4 is a must if he plans on making a run to regain the Light Heavyweight belt.

Brandon "The Truth" Vera exploded on the MMA scene going undefeated in his first eight fights.  Then he stalled.  In his last 10 fights, he's failed to rack up a solid win streak and has gone 4-5 with a no contest.  Vera has all the tools to be a great fighter. However, he needs to show off those tools in a solid win versus Rua, if he plans to stay in the UFC and make a run at the Light Heavyweight title.

This UFC fight is difficult to pick. Both fighters have struggled lately, yet they both have the tools necessary to be dominant.  I'll give the edge to Rua, though.  He came to the UFC and was quickly thrown in against the best.  His recent losses have come to the cream of the crop in the UFC, Jon Jones, Dan Henderson and Lyoto Machida. Fighting Vera will be a step down in competition.  With several fights against the best in the UFC, Rua is now ready to unveil his full potential and take his fight game to the next level. I expect him to do well against Vera and pull out the win.
