Results for UFC 131 Saturday June 11

UFC 131 took place Satuday evening at the Rogers Arena in British Columbia Canada.  There was some good MMA action in this one.  An awesome stand up guillotine and a surprising left hook knockout where in the results mix.  Here are the full results for UFC 131.

Junior Dos Santos vs. Shane Carwin (Heavyweight Fight)

Recap: The fight starts out a bit slow but then Dos Santos gets his boxing going.  He peppers Carwin with jabs and then drops Carwin with a combo.  Dos Santos unloads some ground and pound but somehow some way Carwin survives. Carwin makes it through round two even though Dos Santos continues to land hard jabs and he takes a hard head kick.  Carwin scores a single leg takedown early and the third but can't do much with it and Dos Santos makes his way back up.  Dos Santos continues to control the fight with solid jabs and boxing. Dos Santos stamps his win by scoring a couple of double leg takedowns towards the end of the round. 

Results: Dos Santos wins via judges unanimous decision and will get a shot at the UFC Heavyweight title next. 

Kenny Florian vs. Diego Nunes (Featherweight Fight)

Recap: Both Florian and Nunez come out showing some solid striking techniques but neither are able to land hard shots until Nunez puts Florian on his back with a few seconds remaining in the first round. Round 2 is fast paced and the fight goes back and forth until late in the round when Florian scores a takedown and is able to work some ground and pound. Florian takes the momentum into the third round and stalks Nunez eventually scoring a double leg takedown and working more ground and pound.  Nunez makes it back up but has very little left in the gas tank and Florian peppers him with strikes.  With a few seconds left Nunez lands one last hard punch but it's too little too late.

Results: Kenny Florian wins via judges unanimous decision.

Demian Maia vs. Mark Munoz (Middleweight Fight)

Recap: Maia came out with a new and improved stand up fighting style that was able to stun Munoz and keep him on his heels. Maia landed several strikes in the first round.  In round two Munoz comes back with a solid punch that rocked Maia.  Maia survives with his jiu jitsu while Munoz pounds Mai's body and leg with power punches. Round three was a tactical back and forth battle showcasing all aspects of MMA.

Results: In one of those fights that deserved two more rounds, Mark Munoz wins via judges unanimous decision.

Jon Olav Einemo vs. Dave Herman (Heavyweight Fight)

Recap.  Einemo stalked Herman relentlessly launching right hands while attempting to get the fight into the grappling realm. He was able to score two takedowns in the first round.  Round two became one of the best back and forth rounds in MMA. Einemo almost knocked out Herman as he continued in stalking mode but Herman somehow came back to hurt Einemo.  Einemo hung in tough but eventually Herman finished with some ground and pound.

Results: Dave Herman wins via ref stoppage (TKO).

Donald Cerrone vs. Vagner Rocha (Lightweight Fight)

Recap: Cerrone fought like a lumber jack, chopping Rochas leg down.  Rocha attempted takedowns but Cerrone was too good at stuffing them. Cerrone took over the fight in the third round but wasn't able to finish off Rocha.

Results: Donald Cerrone wins via judges unanimous decision.

Jesse Bongfeldt vs. Chris Weidman (Middleweight Fight)

Recap:  Late in the first round Weidman lands a good knee to the body of Bongfeldt.  Bongfeldt then goes in for a takedown and Weidman catches his head in a guillotine.  Weidman doesn't let up and finishes off the guillotine submission standing.

Yves Edwards vs. Sam Stout (Lightweight Fight)

Recap: Stout starts off the fight firing off strikes.  Edwards waits patiently and then scores a takedown.  Stout makes his way back up and continues firing off strikes until he launches a left hook that lands cleanly on Edwards chin which ends the fight.

Results: Sam Stout wins via KO in the first round.

Jesse Bongfeldt vs. Chris Weidman (Middleweight Fight)

Recap:  Late in the first round Weidman lands a good knee to the body of Bongfeldt.  Bongfeldt then goes in for a takedown and Weidman catches his head in a guillotine.  Weidman doesn't let up and finishes off the guillotine submission standing.

Results: Chris Weidman wins via standing guillotine submission. 

Mike Massenzio vs. Krzysztof Soszynski (Light Heavyweight Fight)

Recap: Although Massenzio was clearly the smaller fighter, he was game and came after the fight aggressively going after takedowns.  Unfortunately for Massenzio,  Soszynski used his size and strength to perfection, fended off the takedowns and punished Massenzio for the takedown attempts. 

Results:  Krzysztof Soszynski was able to grind out each round and wins via judges unanimous decision.

James Head vs. Nick Ring (Middleweight Fight)

Recap: The fight gets off to a great start with the fighters engaging quickly in often. Ring was able to score a couple of takedowns in the first round, but Head was able to land a hard punch that almost finished the fight. In round two Ring dominates with his superior grappling and cuts Head with elbows. Ring continues his ground domination in round three and after punishing Head on the ground for most of the round finishes him off with a rear naked choke (RNC) submission.

Results.  Nick Ring wins via rear naked choke submission. 

Dustin Poirier vs. Jason Young (Featherweight Fight)

Recap: Poirier and Young traded some nice stand up striking for most of the fight.  Good clean technique was exhibited. Young seemed to be quicker with the strikes but Poirier seemed to land the harder strikes.  In both round 2 and 3 Poirier was able to score takedowns late in the rounds. 

Results:  Dustin Poirier takes the win via unanimous decision. 

Joey Beltran vs. Aaron Rosa (Heavyweight Fight)

Recap:  This was a rock em' sock em' bar room brawl type of fight where both fighters stood in the pocket and traded chingasos for three rounds.

Results:  In the third round Beltran finished off the fight on the ground with ground and pound. Joey Beltran wins via ref stoppage (TKO) in the third round.

Darren Elkins vs. Michihiro Omigawa (Featherweight Fight)

Recap:  Elkins was aggressive, Omigawa had good movement and picked his shots. After three rounds the fighters left it in the hands of the judges. 

Results: In what many saw as controversial, Michihiro Omigawa takes the win via judges decision.
