MMA fans in Mexico will finally get the opportunity to see the UFC heavyweight champion in action live. The long awaiting matchup between Cain Velasquez and Fabricio Werdum is going down this Saturday in Mexico City, Mexico! Cain Velasquez is the UFC champion, Fabricio Werdum earned the interim heavyweight championship when Velasquez was sidelined with an injury. Let’s take a closer look at these fighters and then I’ll make my fight pick for UFC 188 Cain Velasquez vs Fabricio Werdum.
Fabricio Werdum is an MMA veteran with an overall MMA record of 19-5. More impressively, he’s 8-1 in his last 9 fights and is 5-0 since coming to the UFC. Werdum knows how to finish fights. He’s finished 79% of his 19 wins, 9 via submission and 6 via KO/TKO.
Early in Werdum’s career he was known as a ground specialist, but lately his stand up skills have vastly improved and were showcased in the interim title fight versus Mark Hunt. Werdum is a highly intelligent fighter who comes into fights with great game plans and picks his spots perfectly. Let’s not forget, Werdum was the fighter who beat Fedor Emelianenko when many considered Fedor the best pound for pound MMA fighter on earth!
Cain Velasquez sports an overall MMA record of 13 -1 with 11 of those wins coming by way of KO/TKO. His only loss was to KO defeat to the hard hitting Junior dos Santos. He avenged that loss with a dominating performance, and just to prove it wasn’t a fluke, he did it again in the trilogy fight.
Cain Velasquez is a predator in the cage. Early in his career he used his wrestling to grind down fighters. He’s continuously developed his stand up and is now also a scary striker. He’s relentless with his attacks. When he’s not punching, he’s going for a takedown. When he’s not going for a takedown, he’s setting up striking combinations. Velasquez plain and simply overwhelmes opponents with this aggression, and endless gas tank.
Look for this fight to start off slow as both fighter settle in. Cain will poke around with some boxing combinations and sooner or later will score a takedown. Werdum is a skilled ground fighter and will be able to defend the ground and pound off his back. As the fight progresses, look for Cain to impose his will on Werdum and slowly start to break him down. I see Cain pulling out the victory sometime in the later rounds as he will be able to get the better of the stand up, and score some sporadic ground and pound.
