UFC 189 won’t be highlighted by the fight we all expected three weeks ago, but, nevertheless, it should be a good one! Chad Mendes, one of the best featherweights in the UFC has stepped in for an injured Jose Aldo and now has a chance to become the interim featherweight champion. Conor McGregor is champion caliber trash talker, but now he has the chance to be a UFC champion fighter. Let’s take a closer look at these fighters and then I’ll make my UFC 189 main event fight pick.
Chad Mendes has an overall record of 17-2 with his only two loses coming to the injured champion Jose Aldo. His last loss to Aldo was a very close decision and has since bounced back with a TKO victory in the first round over a very good fighter in Ricardo Lamas.
Chad Mendes has great wrestling ability and has refined his striking to match that of the best of the best in the division. His striking ability comes packed with fight finishing power. Five out of his last six victories have all been via way of KO/TKO. Will his wrestling and power striking be enough to defeat Conor McGregor?
Conor McGregor is coming into UFC 189 sporting a 13 fight winning streak. His overall MMA fight record matches that of Chad Mendez at 17-2. McGregor hasn’t lost a fight since November of 2010!
Conor McGregor has quickly become a fan favorite not only because of his trash talking, but also because he’s a fight finisher! Fifteen out of his seventeen victories have come via KO/TKO, another via submission and only one via decision. McGregor uses an unorthodox fighting style that seems to confuse his opponents enough to leave openings for his power striking and finishes.
With both fighters possessing fight finishing KO power, this fight might not need all 5 rounds. Look for Mendez to use his wrestling to avoid big shots, take the fight to the ground and use some ground and pound to win rounds. McGregor will be able to counter the wrestling of Mendes and stifle any stand up attacks with his unorthodox style and length.
I see McGregor frustrating Mendez and eventually catching him with some power striking. I’m taking McGregor in this fight! Who are you picking for the victory?
