This Saturday the UFC gets back to putting on a fight card that fans will appreciate. Let’s face it, this year has not been a stellar year for top-notch UFC paper views. This UFC though is a much needed upgrade. UFC 179 features the featherweight champion José Aldo versus Chad Mendes in a rematch of their first fight two years ago. Back then, Mendez was the number one contender and was doing well until he caught a vicious spinning elbow from Aldo. That elbow laid Mendez out and ended the fight in the first round. Let’s take a closer look at these two fighters and then I’ll make my fight pick for the rematch. Hopefully I’ll continue with my accuracy and continue to stay one step ahead of all the other fight analysts.
Jose Aldo is an MMA and more importantly UFC fight winning machine! He comes into this fight with an overall record of 24-1 with that one loss coming way back in 2005. He’s athletic, creative and well skilled. He’s caught some criticism for not finishing fights, but make no mistake about it, he can put people to sleep. In the WEC he once had a streak of 6 KO/TKO’s in a row. He’s KO/TKO’d 2 of his last 4 opponents including Chad Mendez.
Jose Aldo knows how to win and has a toolbox full of MMA skills. The best aspect of his game is his stand up and his great takedown defense allows him to use his favorite stand up tools. Aldo has KO power and one mistake can end a fight as Chad Mendez found out in their first fight.
Chad Mendez is coming into UFC 179 with an overall record of 16-1. Obviously that one loss came at the hands or elbow of Jose Aldo. Since that loss, Mendez has come back strong racking up 5 wins. Four of those wins have come via KO/TKO.
Chad Mendez came into the UFC with strong wrestling skills and great athletic ability. His striking has improved and those enhanced striking tools will be the set of weaponry that might get him the win at UFC 179. Unfortunately for Mendez, keeping the fight standing is what Jose Aldo will thrive off of.
Look for Mendez to threaten with takedown attempts while mixing in opportunistic striking. Aldo will be ready for the takedown attempts and I’m sure just like in their first fight, Aldo will have something lined up for Mendez. Mendez is a beast, but Aldo has defended his title against the best several times. Aldo's experience mixed in with this refined MMA set of tools will get him the victory! I think both fighters will be cautious so look for this one to go into the later rounds.
