In 2012 I went on a streak where I picked 10 UFC main event winners in a row. That streak came to an end when I doubted GSP was fully recovered at UFC 154, but then got back to picking winners when I correctly picked Cain Velasquez over Junior Dos Santos at UFC 155. UFC 156: Aldo vs. Edgar gets the major leagues of MMA going in 2013. Let's take a closer look at Frankie Edgar and at Jose Aldo. Then I'll make my fight pick for UFC 156.
Jose Aldo is an exciting fighter to watch and comes into UFC 156 with a great MMA record and the UFC Featherweight title. He's 21-1 with 13 of those wins coming via KO/TKO. His only loss was way back in 2005. Aldo has incredible athletic ability and one of the best striking arsenals in MMA. He's coming off an exciting win over Chad Mendez where he won via first round KO and defended his title.
Frankie Edgar is a former UFC Lightweight champ and has an MMA record of 15-3. He held his own very well in the lightweight division even though he was consistently fighting bigger opponents and was clearly fighting out of this weight class. He has an impressive resume of wins having beat fighters like, Gray Maynard, BJ Penn, Sean Sherk, and Jim Miller just to name a few. Edgar is very fast, and has great wrestling and solid boxing skills. He's going down a weight class to face Aldo where he'll face someone closer to his size for the first time in a long time.
Jose Aldo has a great record, an awesome arsenal of striking and a heart of a champ, but Frankie Edgar will match up well and is bringing with him a lot of cream of the crop fight experience. For Edgar, this will be his 7th title fight in a row! Edgar has been in MMA wars with the elite in the UFC and has survived! Now he's coming down a weight class. That experience, plus his great wrestling ability will be the difference. I'm picking Frankie Edgar to win the main even at UFC 156 and snatch the Featherweight title from Jose Aldo.
