Due to the fact that Alistair Overeem was popped for PED's (Performance Enhancing Drugs), which was probably not a big surprise to most, Frank Mir now gets a shot to become the UFC (Ultimate Fighting Championship) Heavyweight champion once again, this weekend at UFC 146. Unfortunately for Mir, he's going to have to snatch the UFC Heavyweight title from hard punching wrecking machine Junior Dos Santos. Dos Santos became UFC champion back in November when KO'ed undefeated Cain Velasquez in the first round. Let's take a closer look at Mir and Dos Santos and then I'll make my fight pick.
Frank Mir is not only a Mixed Martial Arts (MMA) veteran, he's a UFC vet, meaning he's been in the major leagues of MMA since 2001. He's currently on a three fight winning streak where he's taken out two MMA legends, Antonio Rodrigo Noguira and Mirko "Crocop" Filipovic. Early in his career, Mir was known as a submission specialist, but his last few fights have shown that his boxing skills have improved dramatically and can hold his own standing and exchange chingasos with the best.
Junior Dos Santos has had eight fights in the UFC, and hasn't been beat yet! Overall he sports a record of 14-1 with his only loss way back in in 2007. Dos Santos is an elite striker with finishing power. Ten of his wins have proven that as they have ended in either a KO or TKO.
Dos Santos vs. Mir at UFC 146 will be power striking versus strategic fighting. Mir is an intelligent fighter that will surely have a game plan to avoid the power of Dos Santos, but the question will be can he avoid it for five rounds while doing enough offensively to pull off a win himself.
Mir might be able to stick and move, but the problem will be that he has to be perfect, while Dos Santos only needs to land one good chingaso. Dos Santos sooner or later in the fight will be able to do just that, and then he'll go in for the ground and pound finish.
I'm taking Junior Dos Santos via TKO in the third.
