By now, MMA (Mixed Martial Arts) and UFC (Ultimate Fighting Championship) fans have seen the Nate Diaz vs. Jim Miller fight where Diaz impressively submitted a submission specialist. Beating Jim Miller put Nate Diaz in line for a UFC Lightweight title shot. But, unfortunately for Diaz, he's going to have to wait for the winner of Ben Henderson vs. Frankie Edgar 2.
Even worse for Nate Diaz and UFC fans, Ben Henderson vs. Frankie Edgar 2, won't be happening anytime soon. It looks like Diaz will either have to take some time off, or take on another fight before his chance at the title.
In a bit of an odd interview, Nate Diaz, referring to training partner Gilbert Melendez tells Sherdog's Jordan Breen "there's no doubt in my mind he's the best 155'er on the planet". Gilbert Melendez is the Strikeforce Lightweight Champion, and it seems that Nate Diaz was vouching for Melendez to get a shot in the UFC and the title. Check out the Sherdog Video.
If Gilbert Melendez came to the UFC, what would that mean for Nate Diaz? They're training partners and I highly doubt they would fight each other. Would it end up in a Jon Jones, Rashad Evans type drama?
As I see it, I don't want to wait for Ben Henderson vs. Frankie Edgar 2. Frankie Edgar is injured at the moment so Nate Diaz should get an immediate title shot. Then, when Frankie Edgar is healthy, he can get a chance to regain the title versus the winner of Ben Henderson vs. Nate Diaz.
Gilbert Melendez definitely deserves a shot in the UFC. But before he gets a title shot, he needs to fight one of the top UFC Lightweights so that he can prove himself in the biggest and best show in MMA.
If Gilbert Melendez does come to the UFC, it looks like Nate Diaz and Melendez will be the Batman and Robin of the division. The only question would be, who's Batman, and who's Robin?
