One of the most misunderstood and maligned submissions is the heel hook. Heel hooks are called dangerous. In fact, they're are not allowed in most BJJ tournamnets. Other people say that leg locks don't work at all in MMA. Leg locks in general, but especially heel hooks, are given a bad rap.
The truth is that all submissions are dangerous (ask Antnonio Rodrigo Nogueira) and there is no submission that will work 100% of the time. If you are going to go for a submission, you have to know how to apply it correctly, you need to know the risks inherent when going for the submission, and you have to know what to do in case you get countered.
Rousimar Palhares has 14 wins in MMA. Six of those wins have come via heel hook. It's safe to say that Palhares knows about applying a heel hook. If you are one of those people that believe that leg locks don't work in MMA, take a look at the following video, Heel Hook From Hell, featuring Rousimar Palhares.
