On December 30th, two of the UFC’s fearless fighters in the lightweight division, Nate Diaz and Donald Cerrone, will meet in the Octagon. Both fighters are coming off “Submission of the Night” showings. Both fighters are in the hunt for a UFC title shot. A win for either Cerrone or Diaz would go a long way in determining the immediate future of the division, and possibly earn one of them a title shot in 2012.
Donald Cerrone has proven to be one of the most promising lightweight prospects to emerge from the UFC-WEC merger. He is more than ready for this fight as he comes into it with a six fight winning streak which featured three submissions and a TKO. If Cerrone wins any type of fight honors,at UFC 141,he would be the first fighter in UFC history to win four,in one year.
On the other hand, Nate Diaz is no slacker. Winner of the Ultimate Fighter (season 5),Diaz has proven himself in fights with notable fighters and is coming of an impressive submission win over Takanori Gomi.
Diaz vs Cerrone is a pretty even match up. Both fighters have an impressive, well rounded fighting style that feature solid stand-up and a great ground game. When it comes to the stand up, Cerrone is an excellent Muay Thai practitioner who has an outstanding Muay Thai record of 29-0-1. Diaz has great boxing with pin-point accuracy, punching power and he makes good use of his reach.
If Cerrone is able to use his aggression and precise Muay Thai offense, I will give the stand-up to Cerrone. On the ground, Cerrone is no slouch. He has notable wins via submissions, however I give the advantage to Diaz.
Nate Diaz is a Cesar Gracie Brazilian Jiu Jitsu brown belt that is improving with every fight, and is capable of rolling with any black belt in his division. He knows how to stay calm and he throws up submission attempt after submission attempt by using great transitions.
This fight is a very difficult fight to call and it’s all going to come down to what fighter is the aggressor and pushes the pace. My official pick for Nate Diaz vs Donald Cerrone is Diaz. He will use his boxing and reach advantage to effectively pick Cerrone apart and will use his famous “Stockton Slap” to keep Cerrone from coming in. If the fight goes to the ground,he will use his experience and Gracie Jiu Jitsu to come out with the win.
